A picture of me taken in 2012

Lavina, 2012

I grew up in rural Michigan and have not lost my love of quiet, privacy, and solitude, although these can be difficult to come by now that I am living the urban life.  I take my digital camera with me often when I go out walking and sometimes use photos as reference material for paintings.  I also use images from Google Street View and still life setups.  Plein air painting is new to me (in 2016), but I enjoy it.  I work with acrylics, oils, watercolor, and mixed media.

I move back and forth between writing and visual art.  I have an MFA in poetry, while my visual art training as been through practice, reading, and taking classes now and again.  I am an associate editor of poetry for Inlandia: a Literary Journey (a regional online journal for the Inland Empire in Southern California).

Many artists have generously shared their knowledge, their work, and their process with me.  I am hugely grateful to everyone who has helped me over the years to learn and grow as an artist.

  1. Hi Lavina –
I just looked at your website and I love your work! We have more in common than you know. I’m also a vegetarian and write poetry. I have loosely followed the Buddhist teachings for years and love to meditate, although I must admit that I have gotten away from a daily practice.

I work with collage, both in acrylic and encaustic and I see that you love collage as well. I’ll be in touch when we return from our trip and we can make a plan to get together 🙂

I have more and more difficulty keeping up my meditation practice. It could be age,
and that I keep myself a little too busy, so I want to be “doing” rather than “not doing”
from the moment I wake up.

Keeping up a blog has been a challenge, and my blog needs more time and attention.
Thanks for looking. Your web site is gorgeous, by the way.

And thanks for the note. I look forward to hearing from you.
